Yes. Utah follows a strict liability rule for dog bite injuries under Utah Code Section 18-1-1. This means the dog's owner is liable for injuries caused by their dog regardless of whether the dog had ever bitten anyone before. There is no "one-bite rule" in Utah. You do not need to prove the owner knew the dog was dangerous.
To recover compensation under Utah's dog bite statute, you must show that you were lawfully on the property where the bite occurred (or in a public place) and that the dog's bite caused your injuries. Provocation is a defense -- if you provoked the dog, your compensation may be reduced or eliminated under Utah's comparative fault rules.
Recoverable damages include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, scarring and disfigurement, and emotional distress. Utah's statute of limitations for dog bite claims is four years from the date of the injury under Utah Code Section 78B-2-307.
